Metropolitan Hive
2025
The Metropolitan Hive proposes a full reimagining of Barcelona’s Plaza del Nord - one of Gràcia’s most vibrant urban squares. Rooted in principles of accessibility and neuroarchitecture, the project seeks to transform the plaza into a space that is both visually compelling and psychologically supportive.
The design begins with the hexagon as its foundational geometry, generating a modular grid system that informs spatial organization and flow. This simple yet sophisticated structure allows for balance, rhythm, and adaptability across the site.
Grounded in neuroarchitectural thinking, the intervention and design enhances wellbeing through spatial hierarchy, movement, and sensory experience.
The design is organized into diverse zones that cater to users of all ages. The plaza is a home to a preschool, theatre, bars and café’s, therefore a kids playground, a submerged theatre, splash pond and ramps among seating areas, create a dynamic yet cohesive public environment.
Behind the simplicity of the design lies a careful consideration of technical details — ensuring the plaza works beautifully in reality, with resolved levels, efficient drainage, and materials chosen for longevity and comfort.
Ultimately, The Metropolitan Hive is a proposal that unlocks the full potential of Plaza del Nord, weaving design logic and human experience into a unified urban ecosystem.
